| Is recuperation strong enough to fully replace the mechanical brake? |
Yes, the recuperation would be strong enough. Nevertheless, a nomal brake is necessary for safety reasons, e.g. if there is an error in the drive system. Since an emergency stop from high speed delivers enormous instantaneous power, the drive system would have to be severely oversized in order to cope with it, which would be uneconomic. Also in the case of a full battery, full recuperation might not be possible. This can happen while driving long distances downhill. |

| How do you design the gearset? |
The gearset ratio is usually determined by the maximum gradeability, which should be 25...30%. This way it's possible to accelerate even on steep slopes or to overcome a curbstone. The top speed results from the motors characteristic curve then. The required dynamics are usually only met with Hybrid Synchronous Motors. Other motor types usually require gearboxes with two or more switchable gear ratios. |
|
| Is gear switching required? |
A switchable type gearbox is usually not required, just a reduction gearset with fixed ratio in the range of approx. 1:5 to 1:10, depending on the weight and use of the vehicle. It should be noted though that maximum power under all conditions is only achieved with a true wide range motor. The Hybrid Synchronous Motor is ideally suited for that, as it delivers maximum power over a very wide rpm range.
